502 Digital Learning Continuum
An exploration of the continuum of learning that can take place in online environments from supplementing face-to-face class teaching to mounting hybrid/blended or fully online courses. Topics include comparing pedagogical approaches, creating and selecting resources, building levels of interactivity for learning, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and facilitating change.
Course Outcomes Fall 2014 Instructor: Randy Labonte
- Become familiar with common terms, definitions and elements related to blended and online learning environments.
- Demonstrate basic competency with design and implementation within blended and online learning environments.
- Plan learning opportunities suitable to the strengths and challenges of blended learning and online learning environments.
- Develop and design intentional learning activities for the learning environment and the learner.
- Create assessment and evaluation methods and tools suitable to the strengths and challenges of blended and online learning environments.
- Integrate current cognitive theory and change management theory
- Examine current research on emerging practices for blended and online learning environments.
- Develop practical and technical skills in all phases of concept development, design, implementation etc for blended and online learning environments.
- Develop skills to optimize learning experiences through personalization based on characteristics , needs, stages of development, current personalized learning mandates and misconceptions.
- Continue from OLTD 501 specifically:
- engage in learning communities and communities of practice
- critically assess and evaluate resources for best practice in online learning

Assignment Summary and Reflection:
This assignment was fun to do as I was interested in learning how to use some of the newer features in Prezi. The process was relatively easy especially since figuring out technology usually tends to take more time than expected! I also leaned how to use Snagit which was used to capture part of Sherry Turkle's TedTalk "Alone Together" that Derek and I embedded near the end of the Prezi.
The exercise itself, examining the benefits and draw backs of f2f, blended and online learning environment was easy enough to discuss though much more difficult to distill. My partner and I both struggled when attempting to summarize what we both thought we had understood so well.

Assignment Summary and Reflection:
The culminating activity I undertook for this course was a Unit Re-design, integrating the Social Studies, Science and Math 10 curricula using the principles of Understanding by Design (UbD). Although the BC curriculum is currently undergoing revisions strongly encouraging the use of UbD I attempted to integrate cross-curricular content, technology and differentiated instruction as well. I was thrilled to begin my foray into screen casting which I believe is an essential skill for online teachers to hone.
